Opinion|Topics of the week
1) Haavisto
On Monday Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto (Green) met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in St. Petersburg. The encounter was eagerly awaited, as Russia had harassed Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell. Lavrov was feared to die either barking or hugging Haavisto.
Fears did not materialize. Haavisto highlighted the treatment of Alexei Navalny and emphasized that Finland was on the front line of EU countries. Lavrov emphasized the good relations between Finland and Russia and saved his bark for German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
2) Termination
Eastern Uusimaa the district court on Monday ordered the dissolution of the criminal gang United Brotherhood in violation of the law and good manners. The organization opposed the closure on the grounds that it said it had ceased operations voluntarily a year ago. The court considers that the operation has continued.
Police are seeking a tool for the fight against criminal gangs from the abolition. Part of the gang’s power is based on seeking power and intimidation with gang vests and colors. Next, other gangs of vests, such as the angels of Hell, may come into view.
3) Resistance
Protest and the strikes continued in Myanmar, where the people refused to submit to the February 1 military coup. The worst headache for the generals is caused by the expanding strike movement. Government buildings and schools are empty, banks stay closed, and hospitals operate at half capacity while officials and doctors stay at home.
The military has tried to quell the protests by force. The protest movement was martyred when a 20-year-old woman Mya Thwate Thwate Khaing, who was shot by police, died of her injuries on Friday.
