Iran, between the blockade and the hope after the election of Joe Biden

First modification:

Uncertainty continues to weigh on Iran’s economy and, consequently, on the life of the country’s lower and middle classes. The people of the country hold their breath to see the outcome of the international disputes between Tehran and Washington and what consequences they will have on their lives.

The color of power in the United States changes as Iran approaches its presidential elections, which will be held in June 2021. The protagonists of the dispute between Washington and Tehran will be others before the end of this year: what else could change?

There are many who hope that the situation will improve with Biden on the other side of the dispute, as his policy is expected to be moderate compared to his predecessor, Donald Trump. However, these first weeks there have been no signs of change; and between the elite and the Iranian political class, it seems that the intention is not to reach out to find a new understanding.

Beyond the political speeches, the Iranian middle and lower class feel the effects of years of conflict. Inflation in the Islamic republic exceeds 30% and makes it difficult for thousands of Iranians to pocket, who see the prices of food and other basic goods rise.

In the suburbs of Tehran, where poverty affects 50% of the population, families can hardly afford to buy meat more than once a week, meat whose prices are skyrocketing and must be obtained on the black market, outside the government regulation.

And in the center of the capital, the middle class sees its life stagnate, aggravated by the pandemic, and any future decision is pending the thread of the political climate.
