Then, he was pinned to the ground face down by three officers, including Derek Chauvin. The latter immobilized him by placing his knee on the back of his neck for several minutes, despite the fact that he repeated “I can’t breathe” until he finally suffocated him and caused his death.
Several Minneapolis residents are concerned that the beginning of the trial will unleash a wave of violence in the city marked by this matter. The City and State of Minnesota have programmed hundreds of police and military throughout the metropolitan area to prevent confrontations or acts of violence.
On the eve of the trial, hundreds of people took to the streets of Minneapolis to demonstrate, with bouquets of flowers and Black Lives Matter signs, demanding justice for George Floyd and other victims of police violence.
During the march, some of the participants carried a white coffin covered with dozens of roses. A large and peaceful crowd followed him, marching to the tunes of Bob Marley, Prince and Sam Cooke.
For a moment, there was silence at the march as lawyer and activist Nekima Levy Armstrong read a list of everyone killed by police in Minnesota since 1984.
