Culture|Television review
In the eight-part What are you coming from? The series excavates a lot that has not previously received the space it deserves.
Suomiräpin history has been documented quite admirably in recent years, especially in books. In addition to individual artists, the stories have been examined, for example, the importance of sex as well as an updated idea of what all suomiräppi now actually holds.
There would still be a subscription for a comprehensive documentary series on the television side. Rock-Finlanddocumentary series Home boysis already ten years away.
The fresher end was recent Finland vs. rap -series. In three episodes, it tried to outline the whole genre of Jump from basements to stadiums but remained scratchy and far too Helsinki-centric.
Mightily eight-piece Where are you from? raise the bar. The gaze is again mostly in the past, but now the locality is in the lead. A lot is being excavated that has not previously received the space it deserves.
Familiar with Ylex in the series Juuso “Buy” Rock travels crosswise to ask Finland how the rap family really started in the biggest cities. Kallio’s own background with rap is visible in a good way: the reporter has a good pot with the interviewees but does not slip into a fan.
In addition to Helsinki, the stops in the series are Lahti, Rovaniemi, Jyväskylä, Tampere, Pori and Turku. Two episodes have been dedicated to Helsinki, which seems like an unnecessary emphasis, considering that the series is supposed to bring all homeland rappers on the same line.
The emphasis is justified by the fact that between different districts of the stadium, locality is considered to be at least as harsh a metaphor as between cities.
Distribution lines is, of course, also found elsewhere than in geography. Of interest, for example, is the recognized semi-true division within the genre into rappers and woodcarvers, rapists who are shamelessly aiming for the top of the lists and more marginally rhyming. All in all, there is now a consensus among the authors that both are needed. The hit players have shown what needs to be done for success, and the Trampers of their own path have expanded the scale.
A number of veterans and fresher talents from different cities can get to the sound. There are basic palefaces that give a historical perspective, but also names that are more foreign to the general public, through which the grassroots level should also be taken into account.
From this it would be a good seam to continue deeper into the provinces. It is good to remember that like rock, punk and heavies in the past, rap has also been taught with devotion outside of growth centers.
Where are you from? TV2 at 9.30 pm and Arena.
