Ukraine prepared for the launch of Nord Stream 2

Ukraine has prepared for the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This was stated by the head of the board of NJSC “Naftogaz of Ukraine” Andriy Kobolev in an interview with the “Ukrainian Week”.

“We have prepared for this scenario. If you look at the figures this summer, thanks to our underground storage facilities and due to full integration into the European gas transportation system, we will have a balance of energy resources and receive them at a fair price, ”Kobolev said.

According to him, due to the launch of the gas pipeline, Ukraine risks losing revenues from transit and the “security component”. However, he assured that there will be no shortage of gas in the country, since the country is protected and “re-exports gas from underground storage facilities.” Kobolev also noted that Ukraine depends on imports from Belarus in the electricity market. “If tomorrow, for some reason, supplies from there stop, then the country may face rolling blackouts,” he warned.

The construction of Nord Stream 2 was frozen in December 2019 after sanctions from Washington. In February 2021, the barge Fortuna resumed laying pipes in Danish waters.

Work on this section is scheduled to be completed in April, and the pipeline will be fully completed by the end of the year. Certification and insurance of the route remain unsolved problems. At least 18 European companies have refused to cooperate with Nord Stream 2 AG.
