Idaho plans to euthanize 90% of its wolves

The ranchers of the state of Idaho, in the United States, whose capital is Boise, a Basque stronghold in North America, have been on the warpath for years due to the attacks of wolves on their animals. Now, your Senate has approved a bill that will kill 9 out of 10 of these animals, a decision that has generated a lot of controversy and that it has been taken to “protect livestock and other agricultural interests.”

Republican Senator Mark Harris says “there are too many wolves.” He was one of those who voted in favor of the bill that seeks to go from a population of 1,556 wolves to 150, which means that 90 percent of the current wolf population in the state will be killed because “they are destroying the ranchers; they are destroying wildlife ».

Different measures

The bill collected by the New York Times It was approved by a large majority of 26 to 7. However, that does not mean that it will take effect immediately: the measure must also be approved in the State House of Representatives and, finally, signed by Governor Brad Little , a Republican who has not yet confirmed whether or not he will sign the law.

Until 2009, wolves had federal protection in the state of Idaho. However, several studies and some lawsuits led to the withdrawal of this protection and, since then, different measures have been carried out that have reduced the number of these predators. Those who support this law assure that wolves, in addition to attacking herds, also cause a reduction in the number of deer and elk that can be legally hunted in that state, which translates into an economic cost for the state.
