Persian Gulf: Americans fire warning shots at Iranian boats

B.In an incident in the Persian Gulf, an American naval ship fired warning shots in the direction of three Iranian military boats. The speedboats of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard approached the ships “USS Firebolt” and “Baranoff” on Monday to within 62 meters, the American Navy announced on Tuesday. The crews of the ships first warned the Iranian boats by radio and loudspeaker. When they got closer, the crew of the “USS Firebolt” fired warning shots.

After the warning shots had been fired, the speedboats of the Revolutionary Guard moved away and moved into a “safe distance” from the American ships, the Navy said. She condemned the actions of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. This has “increased the risk of a miscalculation and / or a collision,” it said. The commanders of the American ships have the right to defend themselves, stressed the Navy. According to American sources, a similar incident had already occurred on April 2nd.

The confrontations in the Persian Gulf occurred during the Vienna talks on a revival of the international nuclear deal with Iran. Under the then President Donald Trump, the United States withdrew from the Vienna Nuclear Agreement in 2018. Trump’s successor Joe Biden has signaled a readiness to bring his country back into the deal. In February, however, Biden emphasized that Iran would have to reduce its “destabilizing activities” in the Middle East and the Gulf region in return.
