Public transport Where would the fast track in Tikkurila go? Vantaa is planning a EUR 77 million tunnel

The tunnel would be below the main line at Tikkurila train station.

Vantaa The decision-makers will decide on Monday whether a tunnel is planned for the light rail line in Tikkurila via Ratakuja or Lummekuja. Both options are cumbersome to implement and costly, but the tunnel solution is justified by the exchange opportunities it brings.

A stop is planned for the trams below the main line in the tunnel to keep the changes as short as possible. The designers’ proposal is to choose the Ratakuja option.

“The track alley option would provide superior interchange connections,” says the city engineer Henry Westlin.

The alignment that had previously passed through Valkoinen Lähteentie fell away because the tram stops would have been far from the main line and Tikkurila train station.

Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) has preferred Ratakuja’s alternative. Passengers save time, and on the other hand, the smoothest option would attract about 20,000 more passengers than the Lummetie option.

In preparation for civil servants the soil conditions and the basements and foundations of the buildings next to the train station have been investigated. Underground is, among other things, the parking garage Tikkuparkki, next to the wall of which a railway tunnel would run.

In practice, a new driveway would have to be built in Tikkuparkki, which would be located in connection with the Kielotie 13 parking facility. This has already been taken into account in the design of the new building. Tikkupark’s current ramp in the Library Park would be removed, and the area of the green area would expand.

“In terms of design, it is good that the key buildings in Tikkurila are new and have good drawings. We’ve been able to do 3D modeling, and compare different options, ”Westlin says.

Tunnel the price estimate has risen from EUR 62 million to EUR 77 million at this stage. According to Westlin, the aim has been to reduce construction costs as realistically as possible.

The price has risen, among other things, due to the fact that the tunnel would be excavated in blocks due to the disruption of train traffic.

Initially, Tikkurila’s policy was given a two-year preparation period, but the matter will be decided now, as the large office building is located on the east side of the main line. The implementation of the new head office would be complicated if the Lummetie option were chosen as the tram tunnel.

Vantaa City Council is due to decide on the fate of the Vantaa tram next year.
