The expansion of the Hamina server center has increased Google’s investments in Finland to two billion euros.
Technology giant Google’s newest data center in Hamina will officially launch operations now Monday.
HS visited the latest extension at the site in early May, when the new data center was ready without finishing and landscaping. At that time, the final testing phase was underway in the data center, during which the systems of the center were put into operation.

The recent expansion began in May 2019, when Google announced an additional € 600 million investment in a new data center.
After that, the fall of Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai visited Finland. Pichai arrived to tell you that Google will invest another € 600 million in Hamina. The centre’s total investment rose to two billion euros.
Google’s data or server centers run the company’s own services, such as search engine, Gmail, map service, and Youtube. Virtually all Internet users are also customers of data centers.
“The past year has made the importance of data centers in everyday life and work even clearer and more concrete. The Hamina data center has helped keep much of Finland running during the corona pandemic, ”said Google Country Manager for Finland. Antti Järvinen says in a company release.
Google has a total of 23 server centers around the world. The center of Hamina is one of the six Google server centers in Europe.
Google came to Hamina in 2009, and the first part of the data center began operations two years later. So in addition to completing the new plug-in, Google is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Hamina project this year.
The new extension will increase the number of employees in the data center to about more than 400. In the past, about 350 people have been required to run the center. During the busiest times, the extension construction site employed up to 1,500 workers.
