They sell two melons for 20,370 euros in Japan

Two top-quality Japanese melons were sold on Monday at auction for the sum of $ 24,800 (20,370 euros), 22 times more than last year’s price, weighed down by the covid-19 pandemic.

The price of 2.7 million yen (20,370 euros) for the famous Yubari melons, in the first auction of the season, is nevertheless derisory compared to other records registered for this highly valued product. “The recovery in prices this year can be seen as the willingness of buyers to encourage people to bid higher,” a wholesale market official told AFP.

The buyer is a local baby food manufacturer, whose president said he hoped the purchase would spread good cheer. “While there is still a lot of negative news, I hope it can help people smile and overcome the pandemic,” he told the national television channel NHK.

Seasonal fruit offerings in Japan regularly attract buyers seeking prestige and free publicity. In 2019, two Yubari melons reached the record price of five million yen, but the sum fell to just 120,000 yen last year as growers accused the virus of driving away wealthy buyers willing to raise the stakes.

The melons come from the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan, a popular tourist destination. Hokkaido is currently in a state of health emergency, as are nine other departments in the country, including the capital Tokyo.
