Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton gets away with no further penalty after the accident with Max Verstappen. The Briton pushed the Red Bull driver off the track at Silverstone and received ten penalty seconds – but won anyway.

D.he seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton is not punished retrospectively for the racing accident two weeks ago when he won his home at Silverstone. After a hearing with the Red Bull and Mercedes team officials on Thursday at the Hungaroring in Budapest, the race stewards decided to leave it with the ten-second penalty.

Hamilton (36) got this after his accident with Max Verstappen (23) during the race. The alleged new evidence presented by Red Bull was insufficient for the race stewards. “For this reason, the stewards reject the request for review,” it said.

Red Bull had expected more from the reconsideration of the course of events. Team boss Christian Horner had repeatedly expressed his incomprehension about what, in his opinion, was too lax for Hamilton. After the contact shortly after the start, Verstappen had lost control of his car and hit the tire wall with enormous force. The Dutchman was then checked through again in a hospital. According to Red Bull, the accident is said to have caused damage of 1.5 million euros.

By winning his home race in Great Britain and the simultaneous end of Verstappen, Hamilton had reduced the gap in the World Cup to just eight points in the standings. In Hungary he can regain the overall lead in the last race before the summer break.
