Dubai spends US$1.5 million to create artificial rain with drones

To combat the heat that reaches 50º C, the government of Dubai has partnered to find ways to create artificial rain. Since the beginning of the year, the National Meteorological Center (NCM) of the United Arab Emirates has already induced 126 rains with the help of drones.

The idea is to give electric shocks to cloud water droplets to stimulate precipitation. The success was shared on the NCM social network last Sunday (18), when four drones of almost two meters, during 40 minutes of operation, were responsible for the storm.

The country is one of the driest in the world, with an average annual rainfall close to 100 millimeters – the northeastern hinterland, for example, has an average of 700 millimeters per year. With the new technology, there were storms across the country in July.

For this, it is estimated that US$ 1.5 million were invested in partnership with British researchers from the universities of Bath and Reading. THE scientific research was published in January this year.

“What we’re trying to do is make the droplets inside the clouds big enough that when they fall from the cloud, they survive the surface (and don’t evaporate),” researcher Keri Nicoll told CNN International in May this year.
