Lukashenko spoke about the protection of the opposition in Belarus

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko recalled how he defended the Belarusian opposition. He spoke about this during a meeting with officials on topical issues of the socio-political situation, writes BELTA.

According to him, on August 9, 2020, on the day of the presidential elections in the republic, unknown persons planned to set fire to the house in which representatives of the opposition gathered. Lukashenko recalled how he turned to the former chairman of the State Security Committee (KGB) of Belarus, Valery Vakulchik, and asked to send a special unit “Alpha” to the meeting place of oppositionists, which was guarding the Palace of Independence in Minsk. “We will stand with you with machine guns, but protect this house. The scoundrels will burn and blame us, ”the head of state said.

Lukashenko added that he learned about the planned attack thanks to the military, who at that moment was guarding the leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. “And he realized that there would be trouble. He understood who could resolve this issue. And he called the Ministry of Internal Affairs, ”the president explained.

During a speech to officials, Lukashenko also told the details of Tikhanovskaya’s departure to Lithuania. He stressed that she was not blackmailed by children or forced to leave the country. The head of the republic also said that before leaving Belarus, she asked the Belarusian authorities for 15 thousand dollars (more than one million rubles).
