Al-Mashishi said in a statement to the public opinion: “I will hand over the responsibility to the person who will be assigned by the President of the Republic to head the government within the year of deliberation that our country has been following since the revolution and in respect of the laws that befit the state, wishing all the success to the new government team.”
He explained that “out of keenness to spare the country further congestion at a time when it is in dire need of all forces joining forces to get out of the crisis situation it is experiencing at all levels, I cannot in any way be a disruptive element or part of a problem that increases Tunisia’s situation.” To complicate matters, and to preserve the safety of all Tunisians, I declare that I align myself, as I have always, by the side of our people and its entitlements, and declare that I will not adhere to any position or any responsibility in the state.
He said he understands “the state of tension and despair among many of our country’s daughters and sons as a result of the great delay in achieving the long-awaited benefits, which led to a lack of confidence in the political class and in various successive governments.”
Tunisian President Kais Saied had issued decisions that included the exemption of Hisham Al-Mashishi from heading the government, freezing the work of Parliament and lifting the immunity of its members, a necessary step in order to save Tunisia.
On Monday, he issued a presidential order deciding to relieve: Hisham Al-Mashishi, Prime Minister in charge of managing the affairs of the Ministry of the Interior, Ibrahim Al-Bertajy, Minister of National Defense, and Hasna Ben Suleiman, Minister to the Prime Minister in charge of public service and acting Minister of Justice.
The presidential order stated that the exemption decision took effect on Sunday, July 25, 2021.
It was also decided, by virtue of the same order, that the secretaries-general or those charged with administrative and financial affairs at the head of the government and the aforementioned ministries would handle their administrative and financial affairs until a new prime minister and new members were named.
