ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill dies aged 72

Dusty Hill, bassist for the American rock band ZZ Top, died on Wednesday at the age of 72. The band made the announcement on its social media channels. They write that Hill died in his sleep at his home in Houston. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

ZZ Top was founded in 1969 by Hill, singer Billy Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard. In the seventies and eighties the band grew into a well-known music group, partly because of the characteristic appearance of the musicians, who wore long beards, sunglasses and hats. In 2004 the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

ZZ Top’s style featured a mix of blues and rock, with hits like Gimme All Your Lovin’ and Sharp Dressed Man. In the early eighties, there was an increasing amount of experimentation with musical styles, such as distorted vocals and guitar loops. This was reflected on the 1983 album Eliminator, which sold more than ten million copies in the US. ZZ Top produced a total of fifteen studio albums and is still performing.
