Applications Apple will change the rules of the App Store, in the future, app developers will be able to inform customers about alternative payment methods

Apple’s own payment system charges up to a 30 percent commission on in-app purchases.

Electronics manufacturer Apple on Thursday announced changes to its app store’s App Store rules that allow software developers to tell customers how it can pay for services outside of Apple’s own payment system.

Among other things, the financial magazine reports on the matter The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) as well as the United States CNBC.

According to CNBC, the change means that app developers can contact consenting customers via email to inform them about payment methods outside of Apple’s own payment system. Information on alternative payment methods must therefore still not be provided in the application itself.

Change is part of the mediation of a class action lawsuit filed by application developers in the United States. In 2019, a number of app developers sued Apple, accusing the App Store practices of violating competition law. Apple has previously required app developers to use the company’s own payment system to collect in-app payments.

Apple’s own payment system charges up to a 30 percent commission on in-app purchases. Last year, however, the company halved its commission to 15 percent for app developers who have earned less than $ 1 million through the platform.

As part of the mediation, Apple will also set up a $ 100 million support fund with less than $ 1 million in revenue for application developers. Grants from the fund range from $ 250 to $ 30,000.

Judge of the U.S. District Court Yvonne Gonzalez Rogersin conciliation has yet to be approved.

Mediation does not resolve another App Store-related lawsuit that Apple is pending with gaming company Epic Games.

About a year ago, both Apple and Google removed Epic Games from their Fortnite app store as the game company sought to circumvent the app stores ’own payment systems.

Epic Games has filed a lawsuit against the companies, and the matter has since been fought on several continents, including the U.S. Federal Court and the European Commission. The charge filed by Epic is expected to be resolved in the United States later this year.
