Do you like to drink coffee? According to a study released at the conference of the European Society of Cardiology (held from 27 to 30 August), drinking up to three cups of coffee a day can help reduce the risk of stroke by 21%.
The survey was conducted by Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary, and evaluated nearly 500,000 volunteers participating in the UK’s Biobank database.

According to the British newspaper The Telegraph, the study found that people who drank a moderate amount of coffee – defined as half a cup to three cups a day – were 21% less likely to suffer a stroke than volunteers who did not drink the beverage. .
People who drank just one cup a day were able to reduce the chance of dying from any cause by 12% and were 17% less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease, the newspaper reveals.
Scientists took into account variables such as age, sex, preexisting health conditions, weight and diet to ensure that coffee consumption was the only factor measured.
“Our results suggest that regular coffee consumption is safe, as even high daily intake was not associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes and all-cause mortality after a follow-up of 10 to 15 years,” says researcher Judit Simon, one of the authors of the study, cited by The Guardian.
Also according to the scientist, 0.5 to three cups of coffee a day help to prevent stroke (CVA), death from cardiovascular disease and death from any cause.
As the British newspaper shows, the research looked at MRI scans to see if there was any link between coffee and long-term health improvement.
“The image analysis indicated that, compared to participants who did not drink coffee regularly, daily drinkers had healthier and better functioning hearts,” comments Judit Simon, quoted by The Guardian.
The scientist points out that more studies are needed to explain the underlying mechanisms, although the benefits observed in current research are partially explained by changes in the structure and function of the heart.
