My darling
The art of declaring love. Maestro Eddie Martínez, from Oaxaca, is inspired by one of the most beautiful love serenades in the history of music and national cinema: Amorcito corazón. The temptation of the most loving, biting kiss, by Manuel Esperón and the writer Pedro de Urdimalas.
“Sweetheart, I am tempted to kiss.” Everyone is tempted to kiss. Eddie heard the song for the first time, in the movie We the Poor, performed by Pedro Infante and Blanca Estela Pavón. Eddie’s painting is very influenced by the cinema, he tells us: “I couldn’t stop thinking about the cinema when I was doing the work. On this occasion, it was a great reunion with elements that I remember from the film, in black and white, it was a way of approaching it from that point ”.
Eddie didn’t copy the movie, he made his own story. He brought the atmosphere of the song to the drawing. He explains his process: “I had stumbles to start this drawing. The song seemed completely an abstraction to me. I didn’t have any item to grab onto, because I wanted not to give a very literal answer. I wanted to look for more elements that were not so transparent, but could somehow provoke metaphors ”.
This song was composed by Pedro de Urdimalas, an authentic inspiration. Talented film librettist, author of the script for the film We the Poor and You the Rich. He appears in the film as “Topillos”. Pedro de Urdimalas created the image of urban beings. Eddie captured the urban atmosphere that the song has. Eddie tells us: “During the whole process I was thinking precisely about Mexico City and what it was like in those years. I saw magazines from those times, to look for some elements that would make me see how the characters in the drawing are living in the moment. At all times I thought precisely that: that it was a story that had as a background the urbanization process of those years in Mexico City ”.
Pedro de Urdimalas wrote the dialogues of Luis Buñuel’s Los Forgotten. The drawing, in black and white, and that black and white cinema with a beautifully illuminated photograph, it seems that Eddie’s drawing was taken from those films: “Inevitably I always thought about the film, I tried to make that atmosphere, the contrasts of light and shadows come directly from there. The heart was the first element that I thought about, it was the starting point. I had refused when I began to do it, but there came a time when the heart, by itself, prevailed. Then look for an element that would connect it with a flower. That was the metaphor of the song: the flower and the heart ”.
Taking inspiration from the film and, at the same time, giving another version of that powerful image was the real challenge, Eddie tells us: “Sometimes when you are presented with challenges that you never imagined you could do, you find a way or a slope that takes you to other searches. This time it was. Suddenly, I found unusual ways, that I had not contemplated, ways that I had never thought ”.
