The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Marcos Pontes, said this Sunday (01.Aug.2021), that the SpinTec vaccine, developed by UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais) in partnership with Funed (Exequiel Dias Foundation), may be included in the PNI (National Immunization Plan).
THE Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) received on Saturday (July 31, 2021) a request to carry out phase 1 and 2 studies by SpiNTec.
“This vaccine could be used within a constellation of national vaccines that will emerge. Remembering that, as Queiroga himself said, we will have annual vaccinations against covid”, said in a press conference held this Sunday (1.Aug.2021).
“The idea is that we have the vaccine participating in the National Immunization Plan within the necessary timetable”, stated. Currently, 4 vaccines are part of the PNI: AstraZeneca, CoronaVac, Pfizer and Jaansen.
Alongside Pontes, were the secretary of Policies for Training and Strategic Actions of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Marcelo Marcos Morales, the dean of UFMG, Sandra Goulart, and the professor of the Department of Microbiology of the Institute of Biological Sciences at UFMG, Flávio da Fonseca and professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Immunology, Santuza Teixeira.
The MCTI said it will invest R$ 50 million in financing CT Vacinas. Another R$ 30 million will be released by the government of Minas Gerais by the Foundation for Research Support of the State of Minas Gerais and the State Health Department.
Secretary Marcelo Morales stated that for the time being it is not possible to establish a marketing value for the vaccine, but that “will be within the essential cost price range for Brazil to acquire this immunizing agent”.
According to Professor Santuza Teixeira, the vaccine should already be adapted to variants of the virus: “What we can say so far is that trials were carried out with at least one of the variants in pre-clinical trials, and the result was similar to the original coronavirus strain”.
Other vaccines also work with adaptations to new variants. The entire Brazilian CoronaVac production, made by the Butantan Institute, will be adapted to the gamma variant, discovered in Manaus. AstraZeneca is conducting a study in Brazil with vaccines adapted to the beta variant, from South Africa.
Spintec
Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) informed on Saturday (July 31, 2021) that it received the request to carry out phase 1 and 2 studies of the SpiNTec vaccine. According to the regulatory agency, the analysis for the study will consider the number of participants and the safety data obtained so far in the pre-clinical phases that are carried out in the laboratory, in animals.
Before the request, formalized on Friday (Jul 30, 2021), Anvisa had already held prior meetings for guidance and clarification to vaccine developers.
The technology used by Spintec combines different proteins to form an artificial protein – a process called “chimera“. This compound is then injected into the body in 2 doses inducing the production of antibodies against the covid-19 virus.
Versamune
On March 26, 2021, Marcos Pontes announced that an authorization request for clinical trials of the Brazilian vaccine Versamune-CoV-2FC against covid-19 was filed with Anvisa. The vaccine, according to the government, is also financed by the MCTI and came from research coordinated by professor Célio Lopes Silva, from the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, in partnership with the Brazilian company Farmacore Biotecnologia and PDS Biotechnology Corporation.
On July 18, Pontes said that the immunizing agent could be included in the National Immunization Plan at the end of this year, as an emergency.
