Many NATO countries, including the military leadership and the US intelligence community, are tempted to return to Afghanistan. This was stated by the special envoy of the Russian president for Afghanistan, director of the second department of Asia of the Foreign Ministry Zamir Kabulov on the air Youtube-channel “Soloviev Live”.
According to Kabulov, there are many people in the American military leadership who oppose the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, who were ready to remain there “for another decade or two” “for a number of reasons, purely selfish, not state interests.”
At the same time, the diplomat doubted that in the current situation they would return there, since “the realization, apparently, has come that this is not only a lost war, that it cannot be won”. Kabulov added that “any attempt to repeat the previous mistake will cost them much more.”
Earlier, Kabulov said that the militants of the radical Taliban (terrorist organization, banned in Russia) will not try to export their ideology to the countries of Central Asia, as they have learned “the lesson of 20 years ago.” According to him, the Taliban have drawn “certain conclusions from history” for themselves. Kabulov called an encouraging signal, among other things, that the process of forming an interim new leadership and announcing its composition, which had been dragging on for more than a week.
On May 1, the official withdrawal of US and NATO troops from Afghan territories began. After that, the situation in the country worsened. 15 August Taliban militants (terrorist movement banned in Russia) announced the establishment of control throughout Afghanistan. The country is currently governed by an interim council, which will later transfer power to the Taliban.
