After meteorologists reported that Tropical Storm Ida, which formed this Thursday in the Caribbean, is targeting the US coast of the Gulf of Mexico, the governor of Louisiana, John Bel Edwards, declared the state of emergency.
“Unfortunately, the entire coast of Louisiana is currently in the forecast cone for Tropical Storm Ida, which is getting stronger and could hit the Louisiana coast as a major hurricaneas conditions in the Gulf are conducive to rapidly intensifying, ” Edwards explained.
Then he sent a message to citizens: “By Saturday night, everyone should be at the place where they intend to pass the storm.”
According to the National Hurricane Center of the United States, Ida is anticipated to cross the western fringe of Cuba starting Friday still as tropical storm and subsequently strengthens before reaching the Gulf Coast on Sunday.
“There is an increasing risk of life-threatening storm surges, hurricane force winds damaging and heavy rains between Sunday and Monday, especially on the Louisiana coast, ” reported the Hurricane Center.
For his part, Brian McNoldy, a hurricane researcher at the University of Miami, warned about the consequences of the storm: “Indeed, Ida has the potential to be very harmful”
Meanwhile, a hurricane watch has been issued that runs from Cameron, Louisiana, to the Mississippi-Alabama border, including Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas and the New Orleans metropolitan area.
As of late Thursday, Ida had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was moving northwest at about 12 mph.
Its vortex was about 105 kilometers southeast of Grand Cayman and 585 kilometers southeast of the western tip of Cuba, while tropical storm-force winds extended up to 110 kilometers north of the center.
The storm is expected to drop 15 to 30 centimeters of rain in parts of Jamaica, Cuba and the Cayman Islands, with the possibility of heavier rainfall in isolated areas.
Likewise, meteorologists warned of possible flash floods and storm surges 60 to 120 centimeters above normal, along with “large, destructive waves.”
