US President Joe Biden has pledged he will defend the right to board after a Texas state law that prohibits women from terminating a pregnancy after six weeks of pregnancy went into effect on Wednesday.

Biden said the Texan law “flagrantly violates the constitutional right” to abortion, established in 1973 by the Supreme Court in the “Roe v. Wade” case, but failed to announce government legal actions against the law, as did other state initiatives to restrict abortion.

“My government is deeply committed to the constitutional right established in Roe against Wade for nearly five decades and will protect and defend that right,” the ruler said in a statement released by the White House.

One of the biggest hurdles for Biden is that the Texas rule seeks to make life difficult for the courts, as typically a lawsuit aimed at blocking a law as unconstitutional has government officials accused.

But this new law prohibits these officials from enforcing the legislation and delegates to anyone the ability to report an abortion. Biden called this point “scandalous”. He also considered that it will make it more difficult for women to access the procedure, especially for those with low incomes or who belong to black communities.

The new legislation virtually vetoes abortion in Texas, as it does not provide for exceptions in cases of incest or rape. No other similar law banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy – when the fetal heartbeat can be detected and many women still do not know they are pregnant – had taken effect in the United States until then.
