In a way, Räikkönen is downright a mythical figure in the F1 world, writes HS’s sports journalist Ismo Uusitupa.
Formula the number one has had a wide variety of personalities over the years. One of the most exceptional is the failure of car mechanic studies Kimi-Matias Räikkönen, whose long F1 career ends after this season.
The 2007 world champion has not always been successful on the track, and especially since his turning point in his career, ie returning to Sauber (now Alfa Romeo), but Räikkönen has been the subject of constant attention and has won several fan votes, among other things.
In a way, Räikkönen is a legacy of Finnishness, or one that Finns are often branded as. Not much talk, juro and never seems satisfied. In addition, Räikkönen has avoided all kinds of statements, including the BLM movement, which is strongly present in F1.
However, those who know Räikkönen do not recognize the public about Räikkönen.
That is Räikkönen’s public image. Is it thoughtful, hard to say. But it has worked. When Räikkönen splits something or even just is in the overall picture of F1 drivers in a slightly different way than the others, he gets a lot of attention and a lot of fond comments. And this is also happening elsewhere in Finland.
Its instead, British journalists writing about F1 have been tired of Räikkönen’s lack of speech in front of the media for years. That’s it, you might say. I was also warned a few years ago that nothing could be lost from Räikkönen. When I then interviewed Räikkö, the interview time did not mean enough. There was a surprising amount of talk and also a thorn towards the F1 journalists: “There are always the same faces and the same questions.”
In a way, Räikkönen is downright a mythical figure in the F1 world. Also Kari Hotakainen book written by Unknown Kimi Räikkönen more mythology. It is not in any form a traditional sports book. Instead of a traditional Finnish book, it is more than two weeks old with a description of a sip.
Now Räikkönen is leaving the F1 races and you can almost certainly say that Räikkönen will also leave the F1 depots after this season. This is what he promised both in Hotakainen’s book and then in an interview. After all, Räikkönen seems to be the only F1 driver who seemed to be pleased that the corona pandemic delayed the start of the season.
Therefore, quitting is not very difficult for him either. There is something to do without formulations. But one thing he may miss a bit: driving an F1 car. That’s the only thing he likes in the F1 world.
