There would also be many valid reasons for declaring a bird capital, according to officials.
Helsinki could be declared the European Bird Capital, the green city councilors suggest Amanda Pasanen and Emma Kari in its initiative.
The initiative has been signed by 18 other city councilors and numerous city officials in their initial response, which will be discussed at the Helsinki City Environment Board on Tuesday.
According to officials, the declaration of a bird capital would be supported by many factors. These include, for example, the very large number of nesting bird species, the decisions made by Helsinki since the 1960s to protect areas of bird value, and the numerous bird-friendly sites offered by the capital.
Pasanen and Kari propose a number of measures to protect birds and suggest that “Helsinki draws up a plan to safeguard and increase the diversity of its birds and to improve equal opportunities for all city dwellers in bird and nature activities”.
Officials also support this proposal in their initial response.
“Environmental Services is committed to drawing up a plan in the coming years. The plan brings together measures that are significant for the capital’s birds to safeguard the city’s diverse and rich nesting birds, ”the reply states.
In Helsinki Today, about 150 species of birds nest each year, two thirds of the Finnish nesting species. The number has grown over the last 20 years.
The large number of species is explained by the diversity of Helsinki’s nature. The city has a variety of habitats such as archipelago, old-growth forests, fields and other cultural environments, as well as a variety of wetlands.
The most significant wetlands are the internationally important bird area Vanhankaupunginlahti and the Lintulahti Torpviken, Bruksviken and Kapellviken in Östersundom.
In terms of numbers of nesting species, Berlin, London, Moscow and Stockholm, for example, are clearly behind Helsinki, although they are considerably larger in area, with the exception of Stockholm. It is estimated that 120-133 species nest in these cities.
