Despite being one of the priority groups in vaccination campaigns, those older than 80 years who refused to be included are at high risk. ANDl Italian Higher Institute of Health reported this Saturday that people octogenarians who are not vaccinated they face a mortality rate fifteen times higher than those who are immunized.
The institute published this Saturday a report dated September 1 in which it explained that in August the hospitalization rate of the unvaccinated Over 80 years of age it was nine times higher than that of those fully vaccinated (187.8 people over 80 years old compared to 21.1 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants).
The rate was fifteen times higher in those admitted in units of intensive care (14.6 compared to 1), the same as in cases of deaths (5.3 cases compared to 0.3 per 100 thousand inhabitants).
The Italian institute insisted on the need for the population to be vaccinated, especially those more fragile groups, and argued that the effectiveness in preventing hospitalization amounts to 84.1 percent for those vaccinated with one dose and 93.9 percent for those who have completed the cycle.
The efficacy in preventing admissions to ICUs is 90.8 percent for those who have a dose and 96 percent for those who have the full regimen, and in the case of deathIt is 84 percent for those who have a dose and 96.6 percent for those immunized.
The Italian government is considering making the compulsory vaccination and also begin to apply a third dose to groups with weaker immune responses in the coming weeks, as recently announced by Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
Italy accumulates more than 4.5 million cases of contagion since the pandemic began in the country in February 2020 and almost 130 thousand people have died.
