King Willem-Alexander unveiled the Holocaust Memorial of Names in Amsterdam. More than 75 years after the Second World War, the names, dates of birth and ages at death of more than 102,000 Dutch victims of the Holocaust, including Jews, Sinti and Roma, can be found there.
Outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte thinks the Monument of Names is a tribute to each victim personally, “with each name as a monument in itself, a memorial for every individual, for every life story”.
According to him, the Monument to Names forces “accountability” for, for example, the “cold reception of the small group that did return from hell, a black page in the history of our country”. And even in our time, anti-Semitism is never far away, says Rutte. “This monument says, no screams: be vigilant.”
Mayor Femke Halsema of Amsterdam stated that during and after the occupation, Amsterdam “seriously failed” in the protection and treatment of “our Jewish residents”.
The Namenmonument is located on Weesperstraat, in the former Jewish quarter, and was designed by the Polish-Jewish-American architect Daniel Libeskind. The financing of the monument cost 15 million euros and was made possible in part by adopting the stones.
