The Director-General of Ibn Khaldoun Hospital for Mental and Psychological Diseases in Aleppo, Bassam Hayek, said that “the man in his forties was in an unstable psychological condition and was admitted to the hospital.”
He continued in an interview with “Sky News Arabia”: “He did not carry any identification papers indicating his identity. The competent security authorities handed him over to us to receive treatment and care, and since the beginning of 2018, we have been providing drug treatment, psychological care and behavioral treatment.”
Hayek added: “With the improvement of the patient’s mental condition, the treating team provided him with information about his place of residence and his family, and accordingly we communicated with some of the people of his area through social media, and we succeeded in knowing the address of his family, who came to the hospital to receive him after he recovered.”
And the director of Ibn Khaldoun Hospital in Aleppo continues: “The psychiatric patient is very sensitive, and mental illness naturally affects the various mental, motor and physical capabilities of the human being. Psychiatric patients easily lose focus, control and a sense of reality, and are exposed to loss and difficulties, especially in light of the difficult conditions the country is going through.”
Hayek explained that Ibn Khaldun Hospital receives patients from 7 Syrian governorates, and receives almost on a monthly basis similar cases, even from relatively remote governorates such as Daraa and As-Suwayda. about them”.
He added: “Under the circumstances of the war and its repercussions, the mentally ill are the most vulnerable to abuse and injustice, as no one defends them. We hope that these patients are respected and not punished and held accountable for their actions.”
And the psychiatrist adds: “In conditions of war, such cases increase, and they are generally found in all countries of the world.”
According to Hayek, there are two psychiatric hospitals in Syria, one of which is Ibn Sina Hospital in the countryside of Damascus, and the other is Ibn Khaldoun Hospital in Aleppo. seam, minefields, or military areas, which makes it vulnerable to imminent danger, and we usually use security and government agencies here to find the families of lost patients.”
He added, “We have worked to publish the details of this case in particular in order to shed light on this phenomenon of missing mental patients who are with us. We constantly receive similar cases. We urge their families and relatives to ask and search for them, especially as we have a hospital specialized in treating such cases for patients lying on their faces.” .
Hayek concludes: “With the improvement of the patient’s condition, who became a clairvoyant who knows his name and his family’s name as if he was born again, we are overwhelmed with joy that we have contributed to saving a person from disease and loss, and we have succeeded in treating many such cases for patients who have returned to their normal lives and integrated into society.” .
