Ukraine revealed the inevitable consequences of the termination of gas transit from Russia

Serhiy Makogon, General Director of the GTS Operator of Ukraine, said that if gas transit from Russia stops after 2024, Kiev will have to optimize the GTS. He stated the consequences of this decision in interview “TSN”.

According to him, with such a development of events, Ukraine will inevitably have significant excess capacity, since initially the Ukrainian GTS was calculated as the only route for the supply of gas from Russia to Europe. Makogon also noted that the total capacity of the country’s GTS is 146 billion cubic meters, while transit does not exceed 40 billion cubic meters. If Russia stops gas transit, then Ukraine will be forced to optimize the system so as not to spend money on maintaining the infrastructure, the head of the Ukrainian company explained.

Makogon added that only part of the system needed to support the country’s domestic supply will be used. At the same time, it is not planned to dismantle the GTS, he stressed.

Earlier, the general director of the GTS Operator of Ukraine said that Kiev offered Russia to extend the gas transit contract until the end of this agreement, which is valid until 2024. According to him, today Ukraine is ready to sign a contract for the next 10-15 years with a transit volume of at least 45 billion cubic meters of gas per year. However, Makogon noted that Moscow never responded to the proposal.
