Animal of the week Can I say more about the kaffir buffalo? Animals also have names that are considered racist

Mightily after the discussion program, a hand was twisted as to whether the use of the n-word was appropriate in any situation.

The world changes. There are remnants that are now thought to be offensive in the name of the animals and have been cleaned up in recent years.

In Sweden a fairly obvious case was a dark finch species called negerfinken. In Finnish, the sooty finch. The Swedish name was changed from black to white: the new name vitbröstad nigrita emphasizes the white front of the bird.

The zigenarfågel, or “gypsy bird,” was also allowed to leave. This name was called the loud and colorful South American hoatsin, or stinking cuckoo.

In England, attempts are also being made to weed out the corresponding word Gypsy from the nomenclature. For example, a leaf nun belonging to moths is a gypsy moth.

In Finland evicted by Kafferkiitäjä. Literally: the bird became an evictor. The new name refers to the way a bird evades rust swallows from its nests and takes over their habitat.

So, what is a kaffir and why is it racist? The word is probably foreign to many, but in South Africa it is a derogatory term for a dark-skinned person, practically the same as the n-word.

The name is derived from the Arabic language, where “kafir” basically means disbelieving, i.e. non-Muslim.

In Finland another kaffir animal persists, namely the kaffir buffalo. It has been suggested that it be said to be an African buffalo, which would undeniably be an easy and clear name. This hornhead can be encountered in shrub and grasslands across Africa.

Stateside many birds are named after the characters of their time. There, a small sparrow bird, named after a 19th-century general and commander-in-chief of the army, has aroused From Winfield Scott.

Scott oversaw the forced displacement of the indigenous population on the so-called road of tears, in which tribes were forcibly marched into Indian territory far from their homelands.

In Finnish, the name of this bird – Scott’s oriole – is not a problem, albeit a special one: the junta turbial.
