Firefighters remove bodies found by residents in the Salgueiro favela complex, in São Gonçalo, metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) – At least eight bodies with gunshot marks were found by residents in the Salgueiro favela complex in São Gonçalo, greater Rio de Janeiro, following an operation by the Police’s Special Operations Battalion (BOPE) Rio de Janeiro military at the scene, informed the PM this Monday.
According to police, of the eight victims, seven were identified and five had a criminal record. The victims wore camouflage clothing.
“The bodies were sent to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) in the region. Seven of the eight dead at the Complexo do Salgueiro, in São Gonçalo, were identified. Of these, five have criminal records or records. One of the dead who has no record was also wearing camouflage clothing similar to the rest of the group,” the civil police reported.
The corpses were found by residents in a mangrove area and members of the Military Police, Civil Police and Fire Department arrived many hours after the deaths. The Fire Department claimed security reason.
The Public Defender’s Office, the Public Ministry, the Human Rights Commission of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) and the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) are closely following the case.
“On Sunday we received reports at night about high lethality by the military police in an operation in Salgueiro. The remains were shocking and the requests were dramatic… we are actively listening to the population”, said the general ombudsman of the Public Defender of the State, Guilherme Pimentel.
“Just over six months after the most violent operation in Rio, the state continues to confuse public safety with police lethality. Those who have to guarantee the rights of the poorest and most vulnerable are those who promote a routine of fear. It is necessary to understand if the eight dead died in the mangrove swamp or if they were taken there“, said deputy Dani Monteiro (PSOL), president of Alerj’s Human Rights Commission.
On social networks, community residents claimed that the death toll could be higher.
The atmosphere was tense in Complexo do Salgueiro throughout the weekend.
On Saturday, a PM sergeant died at the scene in what would have been an attack carried out by criminals. On Sunday, a 71-year-old elderly woman was hit by a stray bullet during a clash between police and drug trafficking suspects. She does well.
The police claim that they went to the cluster of favelas for a “stabilization” operation.
