G20 summit: Jair Bolsonaro’s security personnel reportedly took action against journalists

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro traveled to Rome for the G20 summit, where his bodyguards are said to have attacked Brazilian journalists. They now want to file a complaint.

Rome – The Brazilian head of state Jair Bolsonaro traveled to the G20 summit in Rome last week. While thousands of people demonstrated against Bolsonaro’s policies in Brazil, there were also isolated protests against the statesman in Rome. But in some cases he also met with approval: on Sunday around 50 Bolsonaro supporters took to the streets in Rome. Seven reporters wanted to report on this and, according to a report by the AFP news agency, they were brutally attacked by the head of state’s security personnel.

Journalists criticize brutal treatment: “That is unacceptable!”

Near the Brazilian embassy in Rome, seven journalists were “pushed and brutally treated” by security guards on Sunday, the report said. One of the seven journalists affected is Estela de Sousa Pinto, who works for the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo is working. She filmed the rally of 50 Bolsonaro supporters in Rome with her cell phone. On the video one of Bolsonaro’s bodyguards can be heard telling her in Italian that she was not allowed to report on the rally. He referred to “too many people” on site. The bodyguard then pushed the journalist away. “This is unacceptable. We will file a complaint, ”Sousa Pinto told the AFP news agency.

Bolsonaro receives honorary citizenship in a 4000-inhabitant municipality in Italy

The Brazilian president is criticized in his home country for his corona and environmental policy. The environmental organization Allrise filed a lawsuit against Bolsonaro with the International Criminal Court earlier this month. She accuses him of crimes against humanity due to the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. The Amazon is known as the “green lung of the planet” and is an important ecosystem. Another lawsuit against the statesman could soon follow due to his corona policy. A parliamentary committee of inquiry accuses the president of some serious crimes and recommends an indictment. A total of nine crimes are attributed to him. Bolsonaro had repeatedly played down the corona virus, in Brazil over 600,000 people died in connection with Covid-19.

The Brazilian president received honorary citizenship on Monday in the Italian municipality of Anguillara Veneta, where Bolsonaro’s ancestors come from. The municipality is located in the province of Padua, where the right-wing extremist party “Lega” governs. The mayor of the city declared the president’s honorary citizenship by saying that the community wanted to thank the country of Brazil for welcoming people from Anguillara Veneta. The honorary citizenship is therefore “not directed at Bolsonaro as a person.” The Brazilian president did not travel to the UN world climate conference after his appointment at the G20 summit.
