In the Champions League, Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman show that they can play with and next to each other. But how long? And how much do you depend on your center forward?
I.n Munich a man has had his feet in the game for more than twelve years. There is no path in the stadium on the outskirts that he has not yet walked his way, no ball that he has not yet touched in his own way. He collected goals, assists and titles there – and also one of the nicest compliments when coach Louis van Gaal once said: Müller always plays! Late on Tuesday evening, Thomas Müller, the man who actually always plays in Munich, was on the sidelines in the stadium. This time he didn’t have his feet in the game either, but his hands.
It was 72 minutes over in the fourth round of the Champions League match between FC Bayern and Benfica Lisbon when Müller, 32 years old, waited for his substitution and clapped his hands for a few seconds. He applauded not out of decency, but out of conviction. Before that, he had finally seen with his own eyes how Leroy Sané, whom he was now supposed to replace, had created a 4-1 lead in conjunction with his strike partners. One that Müller, unusually, only had to manage. In the end it was 5-2 for Bayern. That was enough to qualify as the first team next to Juventus Turin for the round of 16 – and even to look a little further into the future.
