They ask for a step towards a political transition after the first anniversary of a conflict that has claimed thousands of victims and two million displaced people.
Nine groups opposed to the Ethiopian regime have announced the formation of an anti-government alliance in the context of the civil war in the country of the Horn of Africa. The United Front of Federalist and Confederalist Forces of Ethiopia includes the Tigray and Oromo militias, currently fighting against the Armed Forces in the north and center. The founding agreement, signed this Friday in Washington, alludes to the need to make way for a political transition after the first anniversary of a conflict that has claimed thousands of victims and two million displaced people.
The newly signed coalition is both political and military, explained Yohanees Abraha, its promoter and member of the Tigray Popular Liberation Front (TPLF), who denied the existence of contacts with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The Oromo Liberation Front (OLA) and the Agaw Democratic Movement, two of the factions mentioned in the document, confirmed their participation. The statement includes groups linked to the Afar and Somalis, other peoples with ancestral claims, and to several smaller groups established in the provinces of Gambella or Sidama.
The possibility of the alliance joining those guerrillas who want to expel Abiy Ahmed is one of the options presented to the organizers. The representative of the OLA assured that the next events depend on the will of the Government. “Of course we prefer a peaceful and orderly transition with the removal of the prime minister,” he said.
Terrified
The situation in the capital has not changed. Daily life continues at its own pace and there is no shortage of supplies, “but its inhabitants are terrified because the TPLF can arrive at any moment and then the conflict will escalate,” explains a member of the Tigrian community in Addis Ababa. He also claims that citizens believe that the militia intends to destroy Ethiopia and kill innocents. “People have been manipulated into these thoughts,” he adds.
In any case, Western foreign ministries are aware of the danger. Washington has already authorized the departure of non-essential officials and London has urged its citizens to leave the territory
Both sides have not reacted to requests for dialogue made by Jerry Feltman, the White House envoy. The OLA, the Oromo ally of the Tigriña, indicates on social networks that it is about 100 kilometers east of the city and denounces bombings on the cities it controls.
