The city of São Paulo is expected to install around 400 rain gardens in the city by 2024. The space serves to increase the permeability of the soil and minimize the effects of flooding, allowing a greater flow of rainwater. Since 2017, 163 gardens have been implemented, 47 of them in 2021.
“In addition to increasing the drainage areas and making the city prettier, with its gardens, we raised the level of vegetation cover in the city,” said the mayor, Ricardo Nunes. According to him, the work is simple compared to the construction of swimming pools. “And because it is in several areas of the city, it has very good efficiency,” he added.
According to the city hall, in addition to collecting and temporarily retaining water, the gardens make the city more flowery and attract more birds. The municipal administration also emphasizes that the equipment filters rainwater pollutants through the vegetation, thus preventing them from flowing into rivers and streams.
