The Taliban in Afghanistan wants to have “good relations” with other countries and will never interfere in their affairs, said its prime minister in his first address to the nation on Saturday (27).

Mohammad Hasan Akhund spoke in a nearly half-hour audio message broadcast on state television RTA, days before his government resumed talks with US representatives in Doha, Qatar.

The Taliban prime minister has yet to appear in public since he was appointed to the post on Sept. 7, as has the movement’s supreme leader, Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, who has not been seen since Islamists took control of the country in mid-year. of August.

“I want to assure all countries that we will never interfere in their internal affairs” and that “we want to have good relations with them”, including economically, said Akhund, recently criticized in local social media for his prolonged silence as the country struggles with a serious problem. economic crisis.

The Taliban returned to power in mid-August, following the Western military withdrawal and the collapse of the Western-backed Afghan government after 20 years of war.

After his return to power in August, Washington froze the assets of the Afghan central bank, and the World Bank and International Monetary Fund suspended their assistance to Kabul.

The Afghan economy – one of the poorest in the world, undermined by 40 years of war, recent droughts and now without international aid – is in free fall, and the country is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe, according to the UN.

In Doha, the Taliban are expected to call for the lifting of sanctions and the resumption of international aid to avert a winter famine in this country of about 40 million people.
