Telefónica launches layoff plan for more than 3,000 employees in Spain, says union – ISTOÉ DINHEIRO

MADRID (Reuters) – Telefónica has announced a layoff plan for employees born until 1967 and with at least 15 years of service, the Spanish trade union central UGT said on Tuesday. The entity calculated that 3,261 employees are included in the conditions announced by the company.

The third-largest telecommunications group in Europe employs 16,000 employees in Spain and will limit the number of participants in the plan to 60% of eligible personnel, UGT said, adding that consultancy KPMG helped in preparing the plan.

Some departments will be spared, such as those focused on cybersecurity, marketing and artificial intelligence, UGT representative Diego Gallart told Reuters.

“Most of the cuts will occur in network deployment, maintenance and more basic customer service departments,” said Gallart.

Telefónica did not comment on the matter.

A source previously said 2,000 to 4,000 jobs would be cut, following similar moves adopted in Spain by Vodafone and Orange.
