Volodímir Zelenski assured that there is a plot underway to end his mandate on December 1
Amid the growing tensions between Kiev and Moscow over the concentration of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine, the president of this country, Volodymyr Zelensky, assured yesterday at a press conference that there is a plot underway to carry out a « coup d’état »that ends his mandate on December 1. Zelensky explained that “Russian representatives” are involved in the coup. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov denied that such plans exist in Russia.
“I have received information from the secret services that a coup will take place on December 1” in Ukraine, revealed the top Ukrainian leader. According to his words, a telephone conversation of the alleged conspirators was intercepted “discussing the matter with Russian representatives”, although he did not specify with whom exactly.
In the recording, according to Zelensky, it speaks of the Ukrainian tycoon, Rinat Akhmetov, who amassed his fortune in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk, now self-proclaimed independent and in the hands of separatists aided by Moscow. However, the Ukrainian president admits that Akhmetov’s voice is nowhere to be found and he doubts that he is involved in the plot.
“I don’t think Akhmetov is willing to participate in this,” Zelensky said. However, he maintained that about 900 million euros have been allocated to prepare the conspiracy. He also made it clear that, if the coup did take place, he would not flee the country anywhere like his predecessor in office, Victor Yanukovych, did. Peskov denounced that the Ukrainian president launched “baseless” accusations against Moscow. “Russia does not do this kind of thing,” he told the press.
On Thursday, the former MP and leader of the Radical Party, Oleg Liashko, said that the Ukrainian president intends to introduce “martial law” on December 1, using Russia’s military “aggressiveness” as a pretext. However, in Liashko’s opinion, what it really seeks is to curtail freedom of the press. “According to my information, Zelensky plans to introduce martial law in Ukraine for two months (…) with the aim of bringing the media under his control and thus fighting protests in the most effective way.”
During yesterday’s press conference, Zelensky insisted that his country “is fully prepared” to face Russia militarily, if necessary. The head of the Ukrainian military intelligence, Kirilo Budánov, believes that the Russian troops have deployed about 92,000 men along the borders with Ukraine and that the offensive could begin “in late January or early February.”
Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014 and the outbreak of war a month later in the rebel enclaves of Donetsk and Lugansk, which receive military and financial aid from the Kremlin, keep Ukraine in a permanent position confrontation with Russia. The Minsk peace accords, signed in February 2015, have not resolved the conflict.
