Argentina Argentina’s ex-president is accused of spying on a submarine accident

According to the indictment, Macri, during his presidency, ordered illegal intelligence actions against the family members and relatives of the victims of the accident. If Macri is found guilty, he can be sentenced to 3 to 10 years in prison by law.

Macri has previously denied that he was guilty of espionage or instructed anyone in his administration to spy. According to him, the charges are political.

Two other people who worked under Macri in the Argentine intelligence service have also been charged in the past.

Argentina the naval San Juan submarine disappeared in the Atlantic in November 2017. The vessel found about a year later from the bottom of the sea. All 44 crew members died.

The cause of the accident is a technical fault.

Family members and relatives of those killed in the accident have said in the investigation that they have been monitored, eavesdropped on and photographed. The motive is considered to be intimidation so that the families of the victims do not make claims due to the accident.

Mauricio Macri was President of Argentina from 2015-2019. Today, he leads the center-right Propuesta Republicana party.
