Our eastern and southern neighbors are calling on the Dutch not to cross the border in the coming period. Due to the lockdown in our country, many Dutch people are currently going to Belgium and Germany where the rules are much less strict.
On the website of picture can be read that the German administrator of the district Borken (near the line Enschede-Doetinchem) is calling on the Dutch to stay in their own country. The same message is heard for his German compatriots. “At the moment, don’t make unnecessary visits to your neighboring country. The Germans should stay in their country, the Dutch in the Netherlands,” said Kai Zwicker.
Because the regulations on both sides of the border are quite different, cross-border traffic would now ‘raise too many questions’. He further emphasizes that if people do visit each other’s country, the rules applicable there must be observed.
Belgium
The governor of Antwerp – Cathy Berx – urges the Dutch not to move to Belgium for their Christmas shopping, restaurant or cafe visit. She fears that the massive arrival of Dutch people will play into the hands of the corona virus. Then there is also a threat of another lockdown for Belgium, she warns.
Since shopkeepers and catering bosses in the Netherlands have had to close their doors, many Dutch people are crossing the border. In Belgium they can still shop and go to the pub. But “letting that happen is the shortest way to a closure of the catering industry” here too, Governor Cathy Berx told the newspaper. The standard. “And nobody wants that.”
“Don’t go down here,” the highest provincial administrator of Antwerp warned the northern neighbors. “I ask the Dutch to bite their teeth.” If it turns out to be not too bad with the dreaded new omikron variant of the virus, “they are again very welcome. But this is not the time to come here,” she told the Belgian broadcaster VRT.
