(Reuters) – The Rio Grande do Sul Court sentenced four defendants this Friday to prison terms ranging from 18 to 22 years in prison for homicide with possible intent due to the fire at the Kiss Nightclub, in Santa Maria, which resulted in 242 deaths in January 2013.
Those convicted include two members of the nightclub and two members of the musical group that performed on the night of the tragedy at the nightclub, which hosted a university party.
The fire started when one of the band members fired a pyrotechnic device whose sparks hit part of the foam-lined roof of the building, which caught fire. The fire spread quickly, killing 242 people and injuring 636 more.
“The case data indicate, without any doubt, the presence of intense suffering, resulting from the reasons why the victims died,” said Judge Orlando Faccini Neto when reading the sentence, according to a note on the website of the Court of Justice of Rio Grande do Sul (TJRS).
The judge even decreed the immediate arrest of the defendants to start serving the sentence, but a preventive Habeas Corpus granted by the 1st Criminal Chamber of the TJRS suspended the measure, which now must be analyzed by the collegiate, the court added.
