The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD), hopes it will not be necessary to cancel the city’s carnival in 2022. He announced this Saturday morning, 4, that the traditional New Year’s Eve on the Copacabana waterfront will no longer be held, by guidance of the local scientific committee. It will be the second consecutive year that the party has not been held because of the covid-19 pandemic. “I hope I don’t have to cancel the carnival, given the importance of culture and economic activity,” said Paes, at a brief press conference this morning.
The announcement of the New Year’s Eve cancellation was made by Twitter earlier. Paes said that the city would have all the conditions to bear the costs of the New Year’s party, contrary to news released after the cancellation was announced. “The decisions are technical, based on reality and scientific information”, said the mayor.
In recent days, doctors and researchers have warned of the danger of a new wave of contamination that could occur – especially after the arrival of the Ômicron variant -, with the crowding of millions of people on the beach and in the streets, during the party. At the other end, businessmen in the tourism sector were hoping to recover part of the losses caused by the pandemic, and were betting on celebrating the turn of the year.
Despite the decision, the mayor invited tourists to visit the city. He said that tourist spots, beaches, restaurants and concert halls are operating normally.
When asked about the cancellation of the New Year’s Eve at Avenida Paulista, also announced by Governor João Dória (PSDB), Paes stated that the party in São Paulo is not as representative as the one held for decades on the Rio coast. The celebration in Rio traditionally gathers 3 million people, in music shows and waiting for the fireworks display. “I think New Year’s Eve in Paulista is beautiful, but it has less impact than in Rio,” said Paes.
