New York City will mandate Covid-19 vaccination for private sector workers in late December, a “preventive” measure unprecedented in the United States, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Monday in an interview televised.

De Blasio appeared on MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ to reveal new restrictive measures against the spread of the coronavirus, including the private sector vaccination order, a few months after it was applied to the public sector.

“In New York, we decided to make a preemptive strike and do something really bold to stop the growth of Covid-19 and the dangers it is causing us all. Today we are announcing a pioneering measure in the nation”, said the mayor.

Mandatory vaccination for the private sector will take effect on Dec. 27, the government official said, adding that the city’s vaccination policies will be updated on the same day to require two doses instead of one to enter restaurants and other venues such as it had been in demand since August.

He also announced that the city will require proof of vaccination from children between five and 11 years old so that they are allowed to enter restaurants, entertainment establishments, among others.

In the interview, the mayor expressed concern about the omicron variant, which he said has “community broadcast” in the city, posing “additional challenges” to the current spread of the delta variant during winter and the time of family gatherings.
