Tomorrow… The joint Emirati-Bahraini satellite “Daw’a 1” will be launched

The joint Emirati-Bahraini satellite “Law 1” will be launched to the International Space Station, tomorrow, to culminate efforts for cooperation in the space sector between the UAE and the Kingdom of Bahrain.

“Light 1” will be launched on board the SpaceX CRS-24 flight, and will be carried by the “Falcon 9” missile, after undergoing a number of tests to simulate the space environment, such as heat and vibration tests, in addition to communication tests, and a review of the satellite’s safety procedures.

Light 1 will arrive at the International Space Station, and it will be controlled and delivered to orbit under the supervision of the Japanese Space Agency.

Light 1 is the fruit of constructive cooperation between the Emirates Space Agency and the National Space Science Authority in Bahrain. This joint space project translates into the depth of bilateral relations between the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain, and the level of strategic partnership between the two brotherly countries in all fields, especially the space sector.

Light 1 is considered one of the nano-satellites, but it does not differ in terms of the technology used in its design from other larger satellites. .

The name of the satellite “Light 1” was inspired by the title of the book “The First Light”, which was written by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The book tells important aspects of the Kingdom’s history. The satellite “Dawwa 1” was designed and built by Bahraini and Emirati competencies from various engineering disciplines, and the joint team worked on the completion of the project in the space laboratories in the UAE.

The team that worked on the design and construction of Light 1 consists of 23 university students, including nine Bahraini students, and 14 Emirati students from Khalifa University and New York University Abu Dhabi.

When it reaches its orbit around the Earth, the “Light 1” satellite will monitor and study the emissions of terrestrial gamma rays, resulting from thunderstorms and cumulus clouds, and the scientific data it will collect will be available for the purposes of research and scientific studies, and these valuable scientific data can be a reference for various research In the same field, in addition to the possibility of sharing this data and cooperating in its study with different research centers around the world.

It is noteworthy that the space cooperation between the UAE and the Kingdom of Bahrain is witnessing rapid developments, with the aim of achieving the ambitions and plans of the two countries in the space sector. space, and their involvement in the implementation of several projects, which contributed to their rehabilitation and providing them with expertise in the space sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Distinguished Partnership

A translation of the distinguished partnership between the Emirates Space Agency and the National Space Science Authority in Bahrain, the agency will participate in the Bahrain International Air Show, scheduled to be held late next year, and it was agreed upon, and a letter of intent was signed between the Minister of State for Advanced Technology and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Space Agency. Sarah bint Yousef Al-Amiri, Minister of Transport and Communications and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Space Science Authority in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Engineer Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, weeks ago on the sidelines of the Dubai Airshow 2021, which in turn witnessed a distinguished Bahraini participation.

The Kingdom of Bahrain is also a founding member of the Arab Group for Space Cooperation, an initiative adopted by the UAE to promote space cooperation among Arab countries. It has 14 member states and is headquartered in Abu Dhabi.
