The United States confirmed this Monday (6) that they will carry out a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, which will be held in the Chinese capital in February.

“The Biden government will not send any diplomatic or official representation to the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games due to the People’s Republic of China’s genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang and other human rights abuses,” the secretary said. White House Press Officer Jen Psaki at a news conference.

Last month, when asked about the matter, President Joe Biden had said he was “considering” the measure, whereby American athletes will still compete in Beijing, but government officials will not be present.

“The US diplomatic or official representation would treat these Games as normal in the face of the People’s Republic of China’s gross human rights abuses and atrocities in Xinjiang, and we simply cannot do that,” Psaki said. Other countries, such as Canada and Australia, are also considering adopting a diplomatic boycott.

Prior to the US announcement, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said China would take “resolute countermeasures” if the boycott were confirmed by Washington.
