The US House of Representatives committee investigating the Capitol invasion plans to vote this Monday (13) whether it will ask that Mark Meadows, Donald Trump’s former chief of staff, be charged with contempt after refusing to testify.
Meadows said he has no intention of appearing on the multi-party congressional committee. Last week, for the second time, he did not show up to testify as scheduled.
“The fact that Meadows did not appear to testify […], after he was given a second opportunity to cooperate with the commission, constitutes the intentional non-compliance with the summons”, affirmed the collegiate.
The commission investigates Trump’s efforts to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election, in which he was defeated by Joe Biden, through a campaign that led to the Capitol invasion, and whether Meadows helped him.
The fourth and final White House chief of staff in Trump’s term told the board that he would not cooperate until a petition from his former boss, who invoked “executive privilege”, which allows presidents to keep some conversations with secret, is resolved. their advisors.
Investigators say Meadows cannot invoke the right to remain silent as he, an ultra-conservative former congressman, last week published a memoir in which he mentions events that took place on Jan. 6 and some conversations with Trump.
Last week, an appeals court rejected Trump’s request on the grounds that the former president had not provided compelling reasons why talks with former advisers had to remain confidential. Now he has two weeks to appeal to the Supreme Court.
Meadows was Trump’s main aide at the time of the riots in Washington and is believed to have been at the side of the then president in the White House when the radicals stormed the Capitol.
The commission says Meadows “is very well positioned to provide key information, as he had an official role in the White House and an unofficial role in the campaign for Trump’s re-election.”
Before saying he was unwilling to cooperate further, Meadows voluntarily delivered 6,600 pages of documentation to the board, including personal account emails and approximately 2,000 text messages.
– ‘Foolish and unfair’ –
On Sunday, a 51-page document was filed with some of these messages, including a Jan. 5 email from Meadows telling an unidentified person that the National Guard was ready to “protect the pro-Trump.”
By Monday night, the commission will likely pass a subpoena for contempt, and the floor of the House of Representatives, which is controlled by the Democrats, is expected to vote on Tuesday on whether to refer the Meadows case to the Justice Department for consideration. presentation of possible complaints against the former employee.
If found guilty, Meadows faces six months in prison for each reported contempt. However, most likely a fine will be imposed.
Meadows accuses the commission of abuse of power and last week filed a lawsuit against the nine board members and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democrat, to ask a federal court to block the application of subpoenas issued against him. and another given with the aim of breaking his telephone confidentiality.
His lawyer, George Terwilliger, wrote to the commission on Monday complaining that the charge is “blatantly unreasonable, unjust and iniquitous.”
Thousands of Trump supporters, many of them linked to ultranationalist and white supremacist groups, invaded the Capitol 11 months ago in an attempt to nullify Biden’s election victory.
At the time, Trump falsely denounced electoral fraud and asked his supporters to march to Capitol Hill and “fight like a devil.”
The House of Representatives recommended filing complaints against another Trump ally, former White House strategist and right-wing agitator Steve Bannon, in October. In July, Bannon will be tried for contempt.
