WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Covid-19 vaccine makers have contingency plans to deal with the Ômicron strain, including a mixed vaccine against the original strain and the strain, and strain-specific booster doses, said the infectious disease expert. Anthony Fauci this Friday.
The US government is working with Moderna, Pfizer and J&J on various contingency plans, Fauci told reporters at a White House briefing.
“One is to speed up the production of vaccines they already have. The next is to make, for example, a bivalent, in which you have the vaccine against the ancestral lineage and the new variant, and the other is to make a specific booster for the variant”, explained Fauci.
“Now they’re assuming they might have to do it and they’re preparing for it,” he added.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working with local authorities to investigate possible Ômicron cases in states other than those in which cases are already reported, its director, Rochelle Walensky, said at the briefing.
Ômicron cases have already been detected in about 40 countries, she said, but Delta remains the predominant variant in the US.
“I know the news is focused on Ômicron. But we must remember that 99.9% of cases in the country at the moment are of the Delta variant. Delta continues to cause cases across the country, especially in those who are not vaccinated,” she said.
