Epidemiologist warns of risk of contracting new strains of coronavirus abroad

Collective immunity has not been formed either in Russia or in the world, so a trip abroad can turn into a meeting with new varieties of coronavirus strains, Alexander Gorelov, deputy director for scientific work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, said in an interview with Izvestia.

According to him, now all cases of the mutated coronavirus – “British” and “South African” strains – are imported mainly from Turkey. But there is a risk of bringing home from the trip and more infectious “Japanese” or “Brazilian” varieties. Therefore, Rospotrebnadzor strongly recommends those who are still going on vacation to choose the regions of our country, while not abandoning sanitary requirements: to observe social distance and wear masks.

“The spread of coronavirus infection (in Russia – Izvestia) has stabilized, there has even been a downward trend, but we did not win COVID-19. The formation of collective immunity is still far enough away, so the step towards balance can be violated at any moment, ”warned Alexander Gorelov.

The expert emphasized that if we do not create herd immunity in the summer, the incidence will rise in the fall. The only way to avoid an outbreak this year is through vaccinations. Without it, Russia will need more than 30 years for 140 million residents of the country to transmit the infection naturally, the epidemiologist said.

According to the Operations Headquarters for the Prevention of the Importation and Spread of a New Coronavirus Infection in the Russian Federation, 8,702 cases of COVID-19 have been registered in our country over the past 24 hours, including 1,133 (13.0%) without clinical manifestations.
