North Korea is preparing to commission a new 3,000-ton nuclear submarine in the near future. The South Korean agency “Yonghap” writes about this, citing information from local and American intelligence services.
According to the agency, the submarine will be capable of carrying three Pukkykson (Polar Star) submarine ballistic missiles. Now the submarine has already been built, and Pyongyang is waiting for the moment to present it with the greatest strategic effect, including with the aim of putting pressure on the United States.
On January 15, North Korea showed a new submarine-launched ballistic missile. The weapon was demonstrated in Pyongyang during a military parade dedicated to the next congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea. Commenting on the parade, the CTAC called these new items “the most powerful weapon in the world, showing the strength of the revolutionary armed forces.”
Later, Kim Dong Yup, professor at the Institute of Far Eastern Problems at Gyeongnam University, suggested that the Bukkykson-5s rocket demonstrated by the North Korean authorities at the parade was most likely just a mock-up: the real weapon would not have been shown for reasons of secrecy. According to the expert, Pukkykson-5 should not be considered a real missile at all. Even the previous model, Pukkykson-4, has never flown, and the one before last, Pukkykson-3, was launched only from a submerged barge, although this series of missiles is supposed to be launched from submarines.
