The global salmon industry is facing huge losses. Due to human activities, the most popular salmon species risk repeating the fate of river red fish species, sharply reducing their population. Bloomberg writes about this with reference to market participants.
Environmentalists interviewed by the agency argue that the size of popular ocean salmon species is rapidly declining. The same conclusions are confirmed by all participants in the production chains, from the supplier of marine products OBI Seafoods, to the chef of the fish restaurant Ivar’s.
“Over the past eight to ten years, salmon have started to get smaller and smaller. It is very annoying when a supplier sends it to me and I can see the size of that fillet, ”said the chef at Ivar’s on the Seattle waterfront.
They estimate that over the past 8-10 years, fish have decreased in size by 2-8 percent, depending on the specific species. Scientists associate the sharp decrease in size with climate change and human intervention in fragile ecosystems, as a result of which, salmon began to return faster to fresh rivers, not having time to fully grow stronger.
A similar problem was previously encountered in Europe. The creation of a system of dams in freshwater rivers and uncontrolled fishing have led to a sharp decline in the population of Atlantic salmon (salmon) and cod. Now scientists fear that a similar fate could overtake their Pacific relatives.
The fears are confirmed by the numbers. Last year, the Alaska region’s catch plummeted 56 percent to $ 295.2 million. Moreover, the losses will hit Russia as well – Moscow and Washington account for 85 percent of all Pacific salmon production in the world.
In addition to serious financial losses for the industry, the sharp decline in the number of salmonids will hit further chains of local ecosystems – fish is a key source of food for bears and eagles.
