The Russians were warned of a possible rise in prices for cereals

Prices for cereals may rise in Russia, Vedomosti reports, citing representatives of several retail chains and suppliers.

It is noted that the Ministry of Industry and Trade is already concerned about a possible rise in prices. The department asked retail chains to provide detailed information on the dynamics of the cost of socially significant products.

The representative of the chain of stores “Verny” said that in February suppliers began to write letters about the increase in purchase prices for cereals by 7.5-15 percent starting in March and April. Vadim Zhurov, the commercial director of the Krasny Yar grocery stores, in turn, confirmed that the purchase prices for cereals have a “steady upward trend”.

Komandor, the largest retailer in Eastern Siberia, also received proposals to increase prices for buckwheat (by 10-15 percent), as well as for millet and oat flakes (by 3-5 percent), said Dmitry Bolotov, head of the company’s communications center.

According to Zhurov, the rise in prices for cereals has different reasons. So, the rise in price of oatmeal is explained by a poor harvest, buckwheat – by a shortage in the market. The situation is also affected by the growth in the cost of packaging.

Earlier in April, the Prosecutor General’s Office concluded that the number of violations related to pricing more than doubled over the past year in Russia. As Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov said, the department’s struggle against rising prices led to the fact that 2,295 violations were identified, although back in 2019 there were only 1,129 cases.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, in 2021, Russians will see a moderate rise in the price of food. The ministry stressed that this became possible thanks to measures taken by the government, in particular, the temporary establishment of fixed retail and selling prices for sugar and sunflower oil.
